Rock Island National Cemetery is seeking volunteers to help with flag placement for the annual Memorial Day event at the cemetery.  Volunteers who wish to help in the effort should arrive at the cemetery at 2:45 p.m. today. Cemetery officials will provide instructions.

The 41st annual Colona Memorial Day Festival will run thru Sunday on the Hennepin Canal State Parkway. Hours are 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, 5 p.m. to midnight Friday; noon to midnight Saturday and noon to 7 p.m. Sunday. It will include music, games, and more. Newsroom Honored for Excellence

Over the weekend, the Iowa Broadcast News Association handed out its awards for excellence in 2010, and the WVIK newsroom brought home one certificate and two plaques.

The certificate, for second place in "Feature" category in the Large Market Radio division, was won by morning news editor Michelle O'Neill for a story on the "Deere Art Collection."

O'Neill also won a first place plaque for "Best Use of Actuality" (sound) for her feature about a guitar class at the Thurgood Marshall Learning Center in Rock Island.

WVIK news director, Herb Trix, won first place for his "Feature" about the online music site Daytrotter, based in Rock Island.

Invaluable production help was provided by Operations Manager, Dave Garner.
