The Big Friends of the Rock Island Library Book Sale is Thursday, March 4 at their bookstore within the 30/31 Branch, discounting their already low prices. But you don't have to wait for a sale to save - the bookstore is always open during branch hours - 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Proceeds benefit the library.

The class Healthy Cooking & Lunch with Donna will be held on Thursdays from March 4 to 25 at noon at Rock Island County Extension office in Milan. For questions or to register, call (309) 756-9978 Ext 10.

On the Thursday night before each Masterworks concert, the Quad City Symphony Orchestra hosts Inside the Music at 5:30 p.m. at the Figge Museum. Conductor Mark Russell Smith leads a discussion of the upcoming concerts and meets with the community. This week he will talk about the Schubert/Bruckner concert.

For the independent film series, Gigante will be screened at Rock Island Public Library at 6 p.m. The film is not rated. For more information, call 309-732-7323.

Singer/song writer Sara Haze and her band will perform at Mojo’s in River Music Experience at 7 p.m. For more information, call 563-326-1333.

Independent Scholars' Evenings will present The School of Conceptual Art: The cutting-edge of 21st century visual art at the Moline Club at 7.00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Please call 309-762-9202 for further information.

This weekend, Quad City Symphony Orchestra will perform Masterworks V bringing together two renowned, yet incomplete, classics Schubert’s Eighth Symphony and Bruckner’s Ninth. On Saturday, the concert will be at the Adler Theater in Davenport at 8 p.m. On Sunday, the concert will be at Augustana’s Centennial Hall at 2 p.m. One hour prior to each concert, Kai Swanson and conductor Mark Russell Smith will discuss the works in Concert Conversations. On Saturday, March 6, The Pen in Hand Writing Conference will be held at the Midwest Writing Center in Davenport.
Five workshops will be offered - The Page as Visual Art at 8:30am; Fiction as Dream at 10:30am; Big Profits on a Shoestring Budget at 1:15pm; Building the Image (for middle-school students only) at 1:15pm; Publishing, Self-publishing and Otherwise at 3:15pm. For information, call 563-324-1410.
